NAHSL 2025 Conference: Keynote Speaker

Keynote Speaker: Sonya Durney

Sonya Durney (she/her) is a nationally recognized library leader, policy advocate, and scholar.

She serves as Director of Educational Initiatives at the EveryLibrary Institute, Scholarly Communication Librarian at the University of New England, and Past President of the Maine Library Association. Sonya also contributes nationally and locally through her work on the Maine Library Association Legislative Committee, the Maine Freedom of Information Coalition Executive Board, and the American Library Association’s Committee on Legislation.

Sonya holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy with a concentration in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service, a Master of Library and Information Science from Simmons College, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Framingham State University. Her research focuses on the intersection of information access, public policy, and the political self-efficacy of library workers.

Beyond her professional roles, Sonya enjoys exploring the Maine outdoors with her husband, son, and their much-loved (and very spoiled) chocolate lab.
