NAHSL CE Course (Webinar) Copyright Skills as Risk Management: The Librarian’s Role by NAHSL Professional Meeting Scholarship Winner Karen Goodman

I just completed a very informative two-part webinar on Copyright Skills as Risk Management, and our role as Librarians in not only raising awareness of copyright in our institutions, but to also answer specific questions about copyright issues.  Barbara Ingrassia did a wonderful job converting her in-person presentation to a webinar session that was offered in two sessions.  Barbara also gave us the opportunity to ask questions between sessions, and address our specific concerns, along with encouraging members of the group to provide examples of how they are handling copyright issues.  While this was a basic course, each session was very informative, and more than anything else, provided validation for our copyright initiatives within our institutions.

The course objectives were two-fold:

  • To raise awareness about copyright and associated risks
  • Show how Libraries can help in minimizing those risks

My two goals for taking this course was to find out how 1) other librarians managed copyright permission requests when no response from the author or owner is received despite all attempts to find, contact and determine if copyright permission is needed; and 2) Learn how librarians are helping to raise copyright awareness throughout their institutions. One thing became painfully clear and that is when asked about Copyright, there is no “one-size fits all” answer.  IT DEPENDS rings true!  We covered Fair Use, using images in presentations, written works, definition of “public domain” and how to interpret and use the Creative Commons license.

The amount of resources we now have access to through this course--especially the Risk Management Tools-- are ones I plan to add to my Copyright Awareness “toolbox.”  This was a great course for copyright novices, and an excellent refresher for those in the “know!”
