** Appraising the Literature

  ----Look at prior to attending----

Description Research articles are the primary source of newly evolving health information.  The consumer of this literature must become skilled in assessing the validity of the information being published.  This workshop will provide an introduction for how readers can appraise the quality of such reports.  This session is a guided workshop in the assessment of the validity of the assigned article.  Participants are asked to read the assigned article and consider answers to the questions provided prior to the session.  No previous experience in assessing the research literature is necessary.
NOTE There are questions that participants in the Appraising the Literature Breakout Sessions should look at prior to attending.  See the document below.

Communities of Interest Groups

Description

You’ve heard the talk about Communities of Interest now hear what's been happening and how things are shaping up as COIs gather around Health Literacy, Healthy Communities, HealthIT, eScience, and Health Care Workforce issues.  These are dynamic issues in healthcare.  Through shared learning, information professionals are preparing themselves and their institutions to respond to information needs around these issues.  Come hear about NER’s Communities of Interest from your COI Leaders and Facilitators themselves.

± Knowledge Management

Description

Knowledge Management (KM) provides the building blocks for the modern Healthcare Knowledge Management Center (HKMC). The HKMC is a model for hospital librarianship that was developed in the New England Region of the NN/LM.  Mark Goldstein and Margo Coletti will provide an update on the region’s 5-year strategic plan, the “Regional KM Initiative,” including development of the HKMC Field Guide and the Pilot Sites.

Innovative Outreach

Description

The days of patrons coming to the reference desk for information and assistance is clearly over. Now, more than ever, it is important for librarians to reach out beyond the limits of the library's walls to provide services to users. Finding new and innovative outreach initiatives can be elusive, however. Join in on the discussion as three creative librarians discuss successful outreach projects they have been involved in, and participate in conversations on how to come up with new and important outreach opportunities at your institution.

Resource Sharing

Description

Online resources are expensive and the library's collection budget does not have the buying power it once had. In such a climate resource sharing plays a critical role. When was the last time you stopped to evaluate your resource sharing processes? Have you wondered what librarians elsewhere are doing or perhaps there' a new technology that would make your work easier? Hear form three colleagues about what they are doing in relation to resource sharing in their libraries, and share your ideas and perspective in a conversation about the future of resource sharing among our libraries.
